Before the Ending of the Day

SATB Hymn Tune (4:00)
Date of composition: 2019

Written for the University of Notre Dame’s Sacred Music Competition, “Liturgy Alive,” this piece is an original hymn tune with organ or piano accompaniment. The original competition asked composers to set the Latin text, “Te lucis…,” for the University of Notre Dame Children’s Liturgical Choir to be sung during the Office of Compline in the Roman Catholic liturgy. With Compline in mind, I wanted to write something more simple and accessible in order to facilitate prayer.

Due to the nature of a hymn tune, the piece is strophic in form with a brief keyboard introduction to introduce melodic ideas of the hymn tune.

This hymn tune may be used with other “long meter“ hymn texts (8888).

Te lucis ante terminum

Before the Ending the Day

Before the ending of the day,
Creator of the world, we pray
That with Thy wonted favor Thou
Wouldst be our Guard and Keeper now.

From all ill dreams defend our eyes,
From nightly fears and fantasies;
Tread under foot our ghostly foe,
That no pollution we may know.

O Father, that we ask be done,
Through Jesus Christ, Thine only Son;
Who, with the Holy Ghost and Thee,
Doth live and reign eternally.
