I Will Praise You, O Lord

In the fall of 2022, I was approached by Rev. Karen Chraska, the Associate Pastor of Worship Arts at Trietsch United Methodist Church in Flower Mound, TX. They wanted to honor the retirement of their collaborate pianist, Frank Hames, who had worked there for many years, so they commissioned me to write a rhythmic and lively choral setting of Psalm 138 for this joyous occasion.

“I Will Praise You, O Lord“ contains a rhythmic and modal refrain that appears throughout the composition. In between these refrains are sections of expressive and beautiful melodies that provide a nice contrast to create a balanced composition. Whether this is sung by a church or community chorus, my hope is that they find joy when preparing and singing this anthem!

Psalm 138: 1-3; 7-8

I will praise you, O Lord, with my whole heart;
before the gods will I sing your praise.

I will worship towards your holy temple,
and praise your name,
for your lovingkindness and truth;
for you have magnified your word
and your name above all.

Though I walk in the midst of trouble,
you preserve me,
you stretch out your hand,
and your right hand delivers me.

The Lord will fulfill his purpose for me;
O Lord, your steadfast love endures forever.
