The Pasture
This pastoral poem by Robert Frost is about a beautiful and simple invitation. Whether it be between friends, family, or loved ones, everyone has a desire for companionship, even in mundane or straightforward tasks. I liked the idea of having someone to share simple moments with, and I found a hint of wistfulness in this text.
I wrote this piece in 2024 when I received my first commission to write accessible music for the middle school choir (check out “Love is My Cry Forever” if you are looking for other accessible pieces!). During my collegiate career, I enjoyed composing difficult works because I was surrounded by singers and musicians who could handle that level of divisi and difficulty, but once I started teaching high school and middle school level singers, I knew I had to reduce some complexity in my writing. It has been a real joy of mine to compose music that allows singers of all ages to connect with.
This piece was named the winning composition of the 2025 Emily Crocker Emerging Composer Competition held by the Texas Choral Directors Association. It will be published by Hal Leonard in the next year.
The Pasture
I'm going out to clean the pasture spring;
I'll only stop to rake the leaves away
(And wait to watch the water clear, I may):
I sha'n't be gone long.—You come too.
I'm going out to fetch the little calf
It’s very young, it’s standing by the mother
It totters in the grass that’s newly sprung.
I sha'n't be gone long.—You come too.
