Description

Memorare was written for the Texas Christian University 24-Hour Composition Competition during the spring of 2021. This was only the second time I had participated in the competition (the first time being I Believe), and the prompt for that semester’s contest lent itself well to a new choral composition. I was given 24 hours to incorporate the first few phrases of Hildegard of Bingen’s chant, Ave Maria, O Auctrix Vite, in my piece in some form or fashion. While I did not have to write a choral piece, I decided to find a different Marian text and write a new setting using Hildegard’s melody. The result was this composition using the Memorare, a Catholic prayer that seeks the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Throughout the piece, you will hear excerpts and motives taken from Hildegar'd’s chant as the contest’s prompt called for. The whole melody can be heard in the beginning with multiple iterations as the harmonies begin to expand from the chant melody.

Like I Believe, this piece also won top prize by a unanimous faculty vote in addition to the audience choice award at TCU.

Memorare

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thy intercession, was left unaided.

Inspired by this confidence we fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother. To thee do we come, before thee we stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not our petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer us.

Amen.
